The Department of the Air Force has selected Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, as the preferred and final location to host the 3rd Air Support Operations Squadron.

A 2022 Army – Department of the Air Force memorandum of agreement directs liaison support for reciprocal service specialties such as Tactical Air Control Party Weapons Systems personnel from the Air Force.

As a result, the service is consolidating the 3rd ASOS at JBER for unity of effort with the Army’s 11th Airborne Division. The move will maximize operational effectiveness of the squadron through increased efficiency in a single location.

JBER will gain 64 active-duty personnel authorizations and three base support tail positions.

The service anticipates full operational capability in summer 2026.
