The little girl in a pink shirt and pigtails flung her arms around the neck of Master Sgt. Mike Maroney, pararescueman, who hoisted her from the flooded ruins of her family's New Orleans home. The photo was a positive iconic memento during a dark time, for not only the hurricane victims, but for Maroney who had just returned from an overseas deployment to Afghanistan, before being sent to respond to hurricane victims. (U.S. Air Force photo/Airman 1st Class Veronica Pierce) A memorable squeeze
Eleven years ago this month, this hug between rescuer and rescuee went viral. In September 2005, Master Sgt. Mike Maroney, pararescueman, was caught on camera by an Air Force photographer hugging this adorable 3-year-old girl with pigtails just after he rescued her, along with her family, from the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
