Casing honor: 440th Airlift Wing inactivates
Pope Army Airfield, N.C.- During the inactivation ceremony of the 440th Airlift Wing, supporting units of the wing present their guidons for the last time. The 440th Airlift Wing inactivated September 18, 2016, at Pope Field, NC. The third oldest unit in the Air Force, the 440th AW's first operational drop was in Normandy, France on D-Day. From 2007 to 2016, while based at Fort Bragg, the unit provided air support for more than 102,000 paratroopers, flew more than 27,000 hours, and supported Operations CORONET OAK, IRAQI FEREDOM, NEW DAWN, ENDURING FREEDOM, UNIFIED RESPONSE, and INHERENT RESOLVE.
