440th AW member perform plyometrics during Efficient Running workshop

Airmen with the 440th Airlift Wing perform a plyometric exercise called “goose stepping” during an Efficient Running Course in the Hercules Gym at Pope Field, N.C., on Sept. 8, 2013. The course was given by Dr. (Lt. Col.) Antonio Eppolito, who said “we want to prevent running injuries in military members. If we can impart a little bit of prevention and a little bit of education on how to transition to the more minimalist shoes, and do so safely and effectively without getting hurt, we hope that in the long term we will have fewer injuries and we will get a handle on this epidemic of running injuries that is just flooding our primary care clinics.” Plyometric exercises like goose stepping are used while transitioning to minimalist shoes to strengthen the musculature of the foot, said Eppolito. The 440th Airlift Wing is currently training for worldwide deployment. (U.S. Air Force photo by Tech. Sgt. Peter R. Miller)
