Lt Col. Val Hendry, 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron Aerial Reconnaissance Weather Officer, visually inspects the amount of sea foam on the ocean surface to assist in determining wind speeds while flying through Tropical Storm Arthur July 1 2014. Hendry was performing this function in addition to the data collected by the Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer, which measures wind speeds on the ocean surface. Before the SFMRs were used by the Hurricane Hunters, the weather officers mainly relied on visual inspections of the surface to determine wind speeds. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. Brian Lamar)
