Hurricane Hunters from the Air Force Reserve's 403rd Wing spent the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina flying into yet another tempest, Hurricane Gustav, which made landfall just west of Grand Island, La., Sept 1. The 403rd Wing, Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., deployed aircraft to forward operating locations ahead of Hurricane Gustav. The wing is also flying missions into Tropical Storm Hannah, just east of the Bahamas. It’s been a frenetic late summer for the Hurricane Hunters. For nearly two weeks, they chased a stubborn Tropical Storm Fay as it darted in and out of Florida. The Wing is comprised of two flying squadrons, the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters, and the 815th Airlift Squadron, known as the Flying Jennies. Assigned aircraft include 10 WC-130Js and eight C-130J-30s. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. James Pritchett)
