DOD launches 2014 Health Related Behaviors Survey for Reserve Component

  • Published
The Department of Defense has launched the third iteration of the DOD Health Related Behaviors Survey for the Reserve Component.

The purpose of the confidential survey is to gather lifestyle and health related data from randomly selected Reservists and National guardsmen in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam.

This is the first year the survey of Guard and Reserve members will be conducted wholly via the Web.  Selected members will be asked to participate by e-mail and the maximum provisions will be in place to ensure each participant's confidentiality.  Participants should be able to complete the survey in 40 minutes. Results from the survey are expected to be available in 2015.

Conducted since 2006 for Reserve personnel, the HRBS-RC collects data on a wide range of topics including: alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use; mental health and stress, deployment history, sexual health and other health related issues.  Results of the HRBS-RC will be used to inform health and healthcare policy and address DOD performance in relation to Healthy People 2020 goals.

Data will also be used to direct funding toward enhancement of the most effective programs that support healthy lifestyle choices, or development of new programs to improve individual and Service-wide fitness and readiness.

The HRBS-RC is authorized under DOD Directive 1010.4; and is supported by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, as well as the Service Secretaries.
