The aircraft at Rodeo 2005 come in many shapes and sizes, but one thing every one of them has in common is their need for a constant supply of fuel.

The 916th Air Refueling Wing, Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., is one of nine refueling wings and the only Air Force Reserve Command refueling wing competing here.
“This is an opportunity to show our abilities to everyone else and to carry the torch of the Reserve Command,” said Capt. Drew McDannold, maintenance team chief.
The 916th ARW flies the KC-135 Stratotanker. The Stratotanker is a unique asset that greatly enhances the Air Force’s capability to accomplish its core competency of rapid global mobility. It also provides aerial refueling support to other U.S. military aircraft as well as those of allied nations.

Captain McDannold said the 916th maintenance team has been preparing for Rodeo by holding practice inspections, touching-up paint and cleaning and maintaining its planes while still flying missions.

The wing has supported Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom along with other Air and Space Expeditionary Force rotations. He said Rodeo preparations have also helped enhance mission activities as well.

For many on Captain McDannold’s 10-person team, KC-135 maintenance is a full-time commitment, not just a weekend job.

Though this is the first Rodeo for most of the team, Captain McDannold feels that their operational experience is exceptional and will take them far in this competition.
