Airmen from the 310th Space Wing, Schriever Air Force Base, Colo., paid respect to those who served before in a Memorial Day observance on May 27 at the Veterans Administration nursing home at Fitzsimmons in Aurora, Colo.

Senior Airman Lyndee Banister regularly volunteers for the Denver Hospice. She participated in the ceremony and worked with the hospice to organize the observance.

"The Denver Hospice deals a lot with veterans and Lynn (Bronikowski) and I wanted to do something to honor veterans," Airman Banister said.

She said getting volunteers was the easiest part of arranging the ceremony. The observance included the pledge of allegiance, the posting of the colors by the 310th Space Wing Color Guard, the singing of the National Anthem, the reading of the poem, "In Flanders Field," written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, and a rendition of Taps played on a Native American flute.

"When the 710th Security Forces Squadron was in Texas, I told everyone about it," said Airman Banister. "I had an overwhelming response."

Veterans of many wars and branches of service, as well as their spouses, packed into the room. They shook hands with the Airmen and share stories about their experiences.

"My grandfather was killed in Korea, so any chances I get, I am coming to an event like this," said Staff Sgt. Jamie Foster of the 710th SFS.

Sergeant Foster said events of this kind are important to the veterans and the current service members.

"It lets them know they are not forgotten about when the people who served after them come back," said Sergeant Foster. "It lets them know their service is appreciated."
