It had been a long time since Senior Airman Andrew Shirling had attended an air show.

"The last time I went to one, I was a little kid," said Shirling, a crew chief assigned to the Air Force Reserve 931st Maintenance Squadron, part of the 931st Air Refueling Group here. "I remember seeing the Army Golden Knights and the Air Force Thunderbirds there, though."

This weekend's "Wings Over McConnell" air show will most likely be one Shirling will remember as well. Today, Shirling was recognized by both the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute demonstration team as well as the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 demonstration squadron for his outstanding achievements and dedication to duty as a member of the Air Force.

The morning began with Shirling getting to ride along with the Golden Knights as they opened the air show. Shirling was able to watch from the Golden Knight's aircraft as the team jumped from the plane to start the day's performances.

Later in the day, Shirling was brought out to center stage on the flight line along with four other members of Team McConnell, where he was recognized by the Thunderbirds.

"It's all very overwhelming," said Shirling. "It's definitely isn't something I expected. To have this happen is really unbelievable. It's really an honor, and it feels great to have my parents here to be able to see this."

"It gives me great pride to see our Citizen Airmen being honored for their accomplishments," said Col. Mark S. Larson, commander of the 931st Air Refueling Group. "Senior Airman Shirling is an example of the commitment and professionalism Reservists bring to McConnell and this recognition is definitely well deserved."

Shirling is a traditional reservist and is currently a student at the University of Kansas, studying aerospace engineering.
