Members of the 655th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group here donated more than $800 worth of school supplies to the Montgomery County Educational Services Center in Dayton, Ohio, Sept. 25.

The supplies were donated by members of the group staff and reserve Citizen Airmen from the 14th, 64th and 71st Intelligence Squadrons during the unit training assembly weekend September 24-25.

Eight boxes and one duffle bag were stuffed with backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pens, pencils, art supplies and more, including a couple flannel shirts. The MCESC will sort through the donations and decide which schools and students are in the most need of which supplies.

“The kids will be so thrilled,” said MCESC Director of Special Services Jessica Davies, who invited the members to return and help distribute the supplies and speak with students.

Giving back to schools is something that means a lot to 655th ISRG Director of Public Affairs, Maj. John Stamm, who coordinated the effort (he is a substitute teacher when not on Reserve duty).

“Some kids come from bad situations, which are by no means their fault, and they aren’t provided with the tools to succeed,” he said. “That’s where Airmen step in and help. Sometimes all it takes to make a difference in a student’s life is for someone to just show them they care.”

“After I first spoke with Major Stamm about the project, I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and determination they had for giving back. I told my staff, ‘These guys are no joke,’” Davies said.

This is the second time in two months that the 655th has provided school supplies to local schools.  In August, they delivered supplies to the Greene County Education Service Center in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

“The supplies were both needed and appreciated,” said GCESC Director of Educational Programs, Amy Baldridge. “78 percent of our student population qualifies for (assistance programs), and sometimes struggle to secure such provisions … we greatly appreciate your efforts.”
