The 943rd Rescue Group safety office hosted a series of personally-owned firearms classes designed to convey safety regulations and laws pertinent to Citizen Airmen during the April drill weekend here.

Instructed by Chief Master Sgt. (ret.) Craig Bergman, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years and is now a certified NRA instructor, the instruction focused on ensuring the integrated base defense plan for Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, which hosts the Reserve rescue unit, was clearly conveyed.

“I’m passionate … and believe that people who own firearms should be responsible and safe,” said Bergman, who was a group “plank holder” in 1987 – one of the founding five of the unit here. “Gun owners need to be aware of the law because you need to know what the constraints are when carrying.”

These classes have been high on the 943rd RQG commander's priority list, and are scheduled to continue in May.

“We want to educate our Airmen on the proper way to store and transport weapons in cooperation with the base integrated defense plan,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Romeo, 943rd RQG chief of safety. “Our Airmen’s safety, both on and off base, is our priority.”
