AFRC salutes its public servants: Andrea McIntosh
ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. -- Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command is celebrating Public Service Recognition Week May 3 – 9.
The week is set aside to inform the nation about what public employees do, why they do it and how well they perform.
Throughout the week, AFRC is recognizing some of its approximately 13,000 public employees. Today's featured employee is Andrea McIntosh.
1) What is your job?
I am an executive assistant to the Staff Judge Advocate. My duties can be summed up as an office manager. I'm a calendar master, editor, proofreader, records keeper, supply clerk, office supplies purchaser, tasker manager, resource advisor, communications specialist, travel agent, special events coordinator, trainer and the list goes on.
2) Why did you decide on a government job?
When I think of public service I think of "We the People". I'm a military spouse, as well as, an American citizen, so why not serve? What better way to serve my community, my country than being a public servant. At the end of the day I can say, 'the taxpayers have earned their money'.
3) What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite part of my job is helping others. I like to see the smile on their faces or hear the relief in their voices because I've helped them, it's rewarding.
4) How do you think your job impacts the organization?
On Administrative Professional Day 2015, my current boss Col. Jeffrey Wilcox, the Staff Judge Advocate at AFRC commented to me, "you are the focal point of the office and you make it a joy to come to work", and the staff unanimously agreed. Again, I'm surprised because to me I'm doing what I'm paid to do, it's in my position description. What I've come to realized is I'm a piece of the puzzle in my organization, the government and our nation. I may not write the mission plan or give the order to go, but what I do is make sure the people who are needed to execute the mission get where they need to go and have what they need when they get there so they can focus on the mission with excellence and pride. I view my public service as an important piece in in the puzzle because a puzzle with missing pieces is not complete. I got this piece.
5) What are some of your personal and professional goals?
My short term goal is transfer into the finance community. The Air Force has invested a lot of training in me and I want to use these skills I've garnered in a more challenging way. My long term gold is to open a girls home for a safe and loving environment for those who have been displaced from their homes and placed into the DFACS Foster care system. I want to provide them the ability to overcome their present circumstances into a successful future.
