WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio --
The 655th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing’s 28th Intelligence Squadron based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, is making history for the wing as it is led entirely by women.
Under the command of Lt. Col. Elisabeth Applegate, the 28th IS is home to more than 70 Reserve Barracudas, specializing in providing airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operators to special operations forces worldwide.
The current leadership chain, referred to as “Lady Leaders,” organizes, trains, and equips their squadron members to provide tailored support to SOF units across the globe. These Lady Leaders prepare 28 IS Airmen to conduct global missions and provide surge capability at a moment’s notice.
This team of highly capable Lady Leaders includes: Lt. Col. Applegate, Chief Master Sgt. Ashely Damm, superintendent, Master Sgt. Lisa Abell, first sergeant, Lt. Col. Katrice Powell Thompson, director of operations, Maj. Ginny Zipen, assistant director of operations, Senior Master Sgt. Patience Spence, operations superintendent, and all four flight commanders, Maj. Jessica Vogle, Capt. Samantha Burrill Westman, Capt. Kelly Hogan and Capt. Jillian Elmore.
“These women warriors have exemplified the necessary strength, determination, perseverance and fortitude to make it to the top. This team provides our young female Airmen, students, and daughters a group of successful women can look up to and admire,” said Lt. Col. Applegate.
