An Air Force Reserve Command special operations unit here received the Gallant Unit Citation March 3 for flying low-level, air refueling missions over hostile areas the first two years after 9/11.

Lt. Gen. John A. Bradley, AFRC commander and chief of Air Force Reserve, presented the award to the 919th Operations Group. He praised members of the unit for their courage, skills and professionalism.

"I'm extraordinarily honored to be here in the presence of so many great Airmen who have served our nation so well for so many years," said General Bradley. "I can't thank you enough for the great volunteerism you've given us over this time. It's been tremendous.

"Thank you for doing what you do. You do it better than anyone I know," he said.

The Gallant Unit Citation recognizes individual and crew efforts from Oct. 19, 2001, to July 1, 2003. During that time, MC-130E and MC-130P aircrews flew low-level missions through hostile territories to provide air refueling for special operations aircraft. They also air dropped special operations teams, other troops and equipment, and transported dignitaries during missions.

After the Gallant Unit Citation was presented, the ceremony continued with award presentations to three Airmen and two aircrews.

Col. Kenneth E. Ray was awarded the Silver Star, Maj. Anthony O. Lawrence received a Distinguished Flying Cross, and Maj. Christopher E. Snider was presented the Bronze Star Medal. Members of aircrews Steel 72 and Steel 71 were presented awards as well.

Hundreds of people attended the ceremony in the wing's fuel cell hangar. They included unit reservists and family members as well as visiting military and civilian dignitaries. Among those on hand were U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, Lt. Gen. Michael W. Wooley, commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, retired Lt. Gen. James E. Sherrard III, former chief of Air Force Reserve and AFRC commander, and Maj. Gen. Richard C. Collins, commander of 10th Air Force.

The wing showcased its assigned aircraft - the MC-130E Combat Talon I and the MC-130P Combat Shadow - near the hangar doors during the ceremony.

Col. Steven J. Chapman, 919th Special Operations Wing commander, said it is an honor to be associated with an organization that earned such an award for its fight against terrorism.

He said the Gallant Unit Citation was a team effort with every member of the wing - from a newcomer fresh out of basic training to the most experienced pilot - contributing to the award. (Air Force Reserve Command News Service)
