Dunn is Reserve Command's GEICO Award nominee

Senior Master Sgt. David Dunn insists he is just "doing his job."  He must be doing it well. So well that he is the Air Force Reserve Command nominee for the 2010 Government Employee Insurance Company Military Service awards.

The annual GEICO Military Services Awards recognize enlisted service members from all military service branches, active duty, Guard and Reserve for their contributions to military and civilian communities.

Sergeant Dunn is the chief quality assurance inspector for the 916th Maintenance Group here and assistant fire chief for the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, N.C.

As the assistant fire chief, Sergeant Dunn oversees a department which encompasses the 60,000 people at Fort Bragg and Pope Field. The fire department answered 7,600 in 2009 alone -- everything from structural and aircraft fires to traffic accidents and emergency medical service needs.

"It's exciting and everything is a challenge. No two days are alike," said Sergeant Dunn. "I get to meet a lot of people and have a lot of interaction with them."

To promote better fire safety and prevention practices, Sergeant Dunn and his department started several educational programs on Fort Bragg, including a partnership with the North Carolina Child Passenger Safety Program.

"To see a child injured in a car accident and have to work on that child is nerve racking," said Sergeant Dunn. "It just breaks your heart. Kids are special."

Sergeant Dunn enthusiastically embraced the goal of the state program to ensure all children ride in an approved and correctly installed child safety seat. His department installed more than 415 safety seats in 2009 alone.

Sergeant Dunn truly believes that being selected to compete for the national GEICO Award is the result of a group effort. His liberal use of the word "we" is testament to that.

"I'm excited to have won at AFRC level because it highlights the work we do," said Sergeant Dunn. "I feel like I'm just doing my job and am not looking for a pat on the back. It's rewarding for me just to help people," he said.

As AFRC's nominee, Sergeant Dunn will now compete against Guard and Reserve members from all other service branches at the national level. A selection committee of senior enlisted members chooses the award winners who will then be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this spring.
