Dr. Eppolito demonstrates heel strike running gait
Dr. (Lt. Col.) Antonio Eppolito demonstrates the heel strike style running gait during an Efficient Running Course in the Hercules Gym at Pope Field, N.C., on Sept. 8, 2013. “Research shows that every year approximately 30% of runners [in the U.S.] suffer an injury,” said Eppolito, a practicing family physician. “That number goes up to 80% in competitive athletes.” Eppolito also said he believes that transitioning to a barefoot style of running, where the mid-foot or ball strikes the ground first, reduces injuries in runners.
