Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF)

  • Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award:  This award recognizes outstanding team performance which promotes a systematic approach for enhancing mission capability, improving operational performance, and achieving sustained results while maximizing efficiency. The award period for this award is two years prior to September 1 of the current year. 

Air Force:

  • AF Exceptional Innovator Award:  This award recognizes the most outstanding Air Force innovator (individual or group) who contributed to continual process improvement through the Airmen Powered by Innovation (API) Program. The award period for this award is 1 October - 30 September
  • General Larry O. Spencer Innovation Award:  This award recognizes the individual and/or team who demonstrates innovation in cost and manpower savings to improve efficiency, operational readiness, and replication of the innovation across the Air Force enterprise.  The period of award is 1 January through 31 December. 
  • General George C. Kenney Lessons Learned Award:  This award recognizes the year’s most notable lessons learned (LL) contribution to the AF mission. This award is open to teams comprised of Air Force Active Duty, Reserve, Guard, government civilian and contractors (contractors as part of an AF team submission). Selections will be made from AF functional and cross-functional teams outside of the LL community whose vision and leadership through the use of the lessons learned process have had a significant impact on mission improvement.  The award period for this award is 1 January – 31 December.
  • AF Annual Lessons Learned Awards:  This award recognizes AF military and civilian members fulfilling LL duties as described in AFI 90-1601, Air Force Lessons Learned Program.  Selections are based on outstanding LL accomplishments during the award period of 1 January to 31 December.

o   AF Field Grade Lessons Learned Military Professional of the Year recognizes an AF officer in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel or Major for their LL efforts and achievements.

o   AF Company Grade Lessons Learned Military Professional of the Year Award recognizes an AF officer in the grade of Captain, First Lieutenant, or Second Lieutenant for their LL efforts and achievements.

o   AF Senior Civilian Lessons Learned Professional of the Year Award recognizes a Government Scale (GS/GM/GG) AF civilian employee in the grade of 14 (or other scale equivalent) for their LL efforts and achievements.

o   AF Journeyman Civilian Lessons Learned Professional of the Year recognizes a Government Scale (GS/GM/GG) AF civilian employee in the grade of 13 (or other scale equivalent) or below for their LL efforts and achievements.

o   AF Lessons Learned Outstanding Team of the Year Award recognizes a professional AF LL team for their superior accomplishments during the year.

Air Force Reserve Command:

  • AFRC Lessons Learned Professional of the Year Award:  This award is intended to recognize the AFRC "LL Practitioners" who have made significant contributions to the Air Force mission through their Lessons Learned efforts and achievements. The award period for this award is 1 January – 31 December.
  • AFRC Lessons Learned Excellence Award:  This award recognizes AFRC functional or cross-functional teams outside the Lessons Learned (LL) community whose vision and leadership through the use of the LL process have had a significant impact on mission improvement. The award period is 1 January through 31 December.
  • AFRC Process Manager of the Year Award:  The AFRC CPI Award recognizes Outstanding Contributions to the AFRC Continuous Process Improvement Program.  Award nominees must have served in the Process Manager/CCO position within the command at least six months of the eligibility period.  The eligibility period begins 1 January and ends 31 December.

  • This instruction formalizes and provides guidance for the API program. Specifically, it outlines procedures for submitting, evaluating and implementing ideas as well as tracking and confirming resulting benefits. AFI 90-1601, Air Force Lessons Learned Program, AFRC Supplement:  

  • This instruction establishes guidance and procedures for the Air Force Lessons Learned Program (AFLLP) Air Force-wide. The AFLLP exists to enhance readiness and improve combat capability by capitalizing on the experiences of Airmen. This supplement describes Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) procedures to be used in conjunction with the basic instruction.

AFI 36-2844, Analysis, Assessments, and Lessons Learned Recognition Program, AFRC Supplement:  

  • This instruction describes Air Force awards in Operations Research, Analytic Studies, Assessments, and Lessons Learned functional areas, presented to individuals and organizations in recognition of their outstanding service or contributions. It explains award eligibility, nomination criteria, procedures for nomination, and winner selection.  This supplement describes Air Force Reserve procedures to be used in conjunction with the basic instruction.

AFI 36-2868, Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award

  • This instruction prescribes the eligibility rules and nomination procedures for the annual Chief of Staff Team Excellence Award Program. The program, sponsored by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and administered by the Air Force Manpower Agency (AFMA), recognizes outstanding team performance and shares best practices within the Air Force.
