In October 1918, Lieutenant Chester Wright attacked a German observation balloon protected by four German aircraft. Despite being outnumbered, Wright forced the German pilots to withdraw before destroying the balloon. In his civilian life, Wright worked as the president of a St. Louis hat manufacturing shop. The 93rd Aero Squadron became today's 93rd Bomb Squadron, 307th Bomb Wing, Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. Citizen Airmen from the 93rd BS flew some of the first sorties against Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan after 9/11.
