5/4/2012 - LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Texas  -- The 96th Flying Training Squadron changed hands during a ceremony here May 4 when Lt. Col. Sean A. Garrett assumed command from Lt. Col. Johnny E. Lindsey. The 96th FTS, which falls under the 340th Flying Training Group at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, supports Air Education and Training Command's Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training.

Garrett said he felt honored to have the opportunity to command a squadron with such an important role in AETC's pilot-training mission.

"The men and women of the 96th are amongst the finest in the Air Force," said Garrett. "Our instructors are dedicated to training highly-qualified pilots ready to fly in today's combat Air Force. I could not be more proud." Prior to joining the 96th as director of operations in 2010, Garrett taught T-1 Pilot Instructor Training at Randolph.

Both Garrett and Lindsey recognized the close relationship between the 96th and the active duty wing and its leadership. Additionally, they thanked members of the Del Rio community for their unwavering support of the 96th.

The change of command completes a distinguished military career of over 25 years for Lindsey, who entered the United States Marine Corps in 1986. He served as a Naval Aviator for 15 years before executing an inter-service transfer and joining the 96th as an Air Force Reservist. In the 96th, Lindsey has acted as flight commander, assistant director of operations, director of operations, and squadron commander.

"I am truly humbled to have been a member of Team (Flying Desert Jackrabbits)," Lindsey said of his tenure with the 96th. "I could not have asked for a higher caliber group of men and women to spend my last years in the military with. I am honored to have been your commander."
