6/10/2011 - WESTOVER AIR RESERVE BASE, Mass. -- Six extraordinary airmen demonstrated what the true definition of being a wingman is by helping two service members after an auto accident on June 5.

As the June UTA came to an end, two airmen were involved in a motor vehicle accident on Route 90, prompting assistance from service members passing by. Seeing their fellow airmen in need, Master Sgt. Frederick Hetu, Tech. Sgt. Michael Hyde, Staff Sgt. Nora Ling, Tech Sgt. George Tewksbury, Tech Sgt. Joann LaFleur, and Tech Sgt. Eduardo Hurtado, all of the 439th Airlift Wing, stopped to assist the airmen.

The service members noticed that the two airmen had been injured in the accident, and utilizing self-aid buddy care, they rendered first aid to the two victims simultaneously. One of the victims was dazed and complained of neck and back pain; the other victim was struck in the face when his vehicle's airbag deployed during the accident.

Shortly after the accident, medical workers responded and transported both victims to the hospital. The six airmen who responded remained on the scene until medical workers left.

"Their steadfast devotion as Wingmen and their selfless acts of courage during a difficult ordeal reflect great credit upon themselves and the United States Air Force," according to Command Chief Master Sergeant Michael F. Thorpe, 439th Airlift Wing.
