During the first two weeks of May, the Department of Defense activated 108 reservists from the 446th Airlift Wing here to support the Global War on Terrorism.

Since February, a total of 271 wing people received orders placing them on active duty.

DOD has the authority to call up another 54 in the Air Force Reserve Command wing. These reservists expect to report for duty in June and July.

Eighty-nine of the activated reservists are from maintenance squadrons. They work at McChord AFB and deploy when needed.

Another 19 activated reservists belong to the 446th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. They provide medical flying support in and out of the continental United States.

Reservists in the 446th AW support Air Mobility Command missions at McChord AFB and around the world on a daily basis, performing about 25 percent of the mission of the base annually. The 446th AW is nearly a mirror image of the active-duty host wing and blends seamlessly into active-duty operations when called upon.

A part of the Ready Reserve, the 446th AW is made up of 2,300 trained reservists who may be recalled to active duty to augment active forces in time of war or national emergency.

These reservists are ready and can be mobilized within 72 hours. The partial mobilization of reservists is for one year with an option for a second year.

The 446th AW and the active force’s 62nd AW at McChord AFB fly the C-17 Globemaster III in support of America’s global reach commitment.

The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. In addition, it is able to fly throughout a geographical region to provide theater airlift support.
