An Air Force reservist from Whiteman AFB, Mo., won the title of Air Force Journalist of the Year.

Tech. Sgt. Leo Brown is a public affairs specialist in the 442nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office. His award is the most prestigious writing honor given to Air Force journalists.

To be considered for the title, he submitted several articles including his four-part series about prisoners of war from World War II. The series also won its category, qualifying him to represent the Air Force in both categories in the Department of Defense's Thomas Jefferson competition.

Another reservist, Staff Sgt. Paul Flipse of the 920th Rescue Wing, Patrick AFB, Fla., placed third in the Air Force contest's feature article category.

Both sergeants work for their wing's monthly magazine. Whiteman's Mohawk was named the best publication in Air Force Reserve Command, and Patrick's Angel's Wing finished second.

Sergeant Brown started working in the 442nd Fighter Wing's public affairs office in 2001 when he joined the Air Force Reserve. He was a public affairs specialist on active duty from 1989 to 1992. (Air Force Reserve Command News Service from a 442nd FW news release)
