Frequently Asked Questions

FOR TEENS

Q. Can I talk to teens that have been to a Summit before?
A. Yes, go to Facebook, search AFR/ANG Teen Summit. Check out tons of pictures and talk to previous AF campers.

Q. Who should write my essay?
A. YOU!! Not your parent...

Q. How many teens will be competing for a slot?
A. In 2011, we received over 900 applications for 320 slots. Give your best effort!

Q. How will I hear if I'm accepted?
A. You and your parent will receive an email no later than 27 April with a confirmation of acceptance, waiting list status, or decline notice.

FOR PARENTS

Q. How are selections made?
A. A selection committee will be established consisting of AFR and ANG staff to review and rank the applications based on the following factors:
· Geographic location - One goal of the teen summit is to encourage representation from all 50 states. Multiple attendees from the same state will be minimized whenever possible.
· Gender - Equal representation of males and females is ideal. A disproportionate number of either gender may not be possible due to lodging accommodations.
· Age - It is important to get representation of both younger and older teens to ensure all issues are captured and addressed. A variety of ages also contributes to the success of the activities and classes provided.
· Sponsor - Representation from dependents of all ranks of enlisted Airmen and officers ensures a variety of experiences and view points are brought to the Summit.
· Branch of Service - All efforts will be made to ensure both Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard dependents have equal opportunity to attend a Teen Summit.
· Essay - Each application must contain two short answer essay questions to be written by the applicant. The following factors will be considered when reviewing essays: moral character, commitment to service, personal responsibility, and originality. The essays must be completed for consideration to attend any Teen Summit.
· Teens may only apply for one Summit. Only first-time applicants are eligible this year. Returning campers' applications will be discarded.

Q. How will I know if my teen is accepted?
A. The teen and parent will receive an email no later than 27 April with a confirmation of acceptance, waiting list status, or decline notice.

Q. What happens once my teen is accepted?
A. The following forms are due immediately: Code of Conduct, Transportation Agreement, Medical Information, and Adventure Waivers. These forms will confirm teens acceptance and airline tickets will be purchased.

Q. How is my teen's airline reservation purchased?
A. Airline tickets will be purchased by AFR staff and e-tickets will be emailed to the teen and parent. Once teen attendance has been confirmed and travel arrangements made, parents will be responsible to HQ AFRC for changes to airline tickets and/or cancellations.

Q. Do you have a waiting list?
A. Yes, once available slots are filled a waiting list is created based on the rankings of applications. Any declined camp slot will be filled starting at the top of the waiting list and working down until the established cutoff date. This will allow for sufficient time for securing travel arrangements and completing all forms.

Q. What does my teen need to bring to camp?
A. We will send a list of suggested items to bring to camp from clothing and shoes to personal hygiene and linens along with confirmation of acceptance.

Q. What should my teen not bring to camp?
A. Alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, fireworks, any kind of weapon

Q. Who can I talk to for more information?
A. For more information, please contact Brandi McGonagill or Krystal Shiver at afrc.youthprograms@us.af.mil or by calling 478-327-2090.
