The 94th Airlift Wing hosted Georgia’s17th annual U.S. Service Academy Day May 9, where more than 1,200 applicants, parents and grandparents were given the chance to meet with state elected officials who are integral to the application process to a military service academy.

The goal of the program is to allow high school students the opportunity to meet with representatives from each of the U.S. service academies, including the Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy.

"This event started 17 years ago and we had just a handful of attendees," said Sen. Johnny Isakson. "This time we had more than 1,200."

Matthew McKay, an upcoming senior, attended the event with his parents John and Rose and expressed interest in going to college at one of the service academies.

"I want to go to an academy because of the prestige and the challenge of them," said McKay.

His father, John, mentioned that Matthew comes from an Air Force lineage as his grandfather is an AF veteran.

During the event, members of the Georgia legislature, as well as representatives from each academy, were given the opportunity to speak to all the applicants.

“Our country is at a crossroads,” said Sen. David Perdue. “We have to be true leaders in the world today. Our best days are ahead. When I look into the eyes of the young people here today, I know America will be fine.”

Col. Brett Clark, 94th AW commander, gave the opening remarks during the Academy Day event, letting the applicants know how thankful he was for their interest in attending a service academy, and the potential service they will perform for their country.

"At more than 1,200 people, this is our best Academy Day yet," said Clark. "This is the best event in the U.S. I couldn’t be more proud of Team Dobbins."

Isakson also expressed his gratitude toward the young men and women who are applying to attend some of the most rigorous college curriculums.

"Selection to a military academy is one of the highest honors for a young person and their families," said Isakson. "In 2015, 198 Georgia students will be headed for a military academy."
