The 908th Airlift Wing started the fiscal year with a cautious, yet productive, October 2022 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

The Unit Training Assembly that was scheduled for October 1 and 2, 2022, was rescheduled in anticipation of potential damaging effects as a result of Hurricane Ian.

“The health and well being of the wing members and their families is always our top priority,” explained 908th Airlift Wing Commander, Col. Craig Drescher. “Therefore, we determined that we didn’t need to assume risk by having UTA considering the large storm that is bearing down on Florida and Georgia.”

The second week of the month was a short one as the wing eased into the beginning of the holiday season. Wing members participated in a community relations event, the annual Air and Space Force Association golf tournament at Arrow Head Golf Club in Montgomery on October 5.

“It was great day for our Reserve Citizen Airmen to interact with community members in a fun environment,” said 908th Airlift Wing Spokesperson Maj. John T. Stamm.

Another huge event was the three-year anniversary of the wing’s 26th commander, Drescher, taking command of the unit.

On October 18, the wing celebrated the 51st birthday of the 908th Security Forces Squadron, birthed in 1971 as the 908th Weapons System Security Flight.

The wing then celebrated the 62nd anniversary of the 908th Civil Engineering Flight, now known as the 908th Civil Engineer Squadron, being assigned to the 908th Tactical Air Support Group on October 25, 1969.

October 27, 1962, saw more than 300 members of the 357th Troop Carrier Squadron ordered to active duty at Bates Field, Alabama during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The month of October is also the anniversary of the 908th Tactical Airlift Group converting to the C-130E Hercules in 1983.
