Members of the 710th Combat Operations Squadron from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, and Det. 1, 609th Air Operations Center held a ceremony Aug. 31 to mark the activation of Det. 1, 710th COS here.

Det. 1, 710th COS will officially activate Sept. 1, and will become a total force partner with the 609th AOC and U.S. Air Forces Central Command through Det. 1, 609th AOC.

This partnership supports the Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein’s third focus area: enhancing multi-domain command and control.

“The stand-up of Det. 1, 710th COS strengthens the synergy of an existing active-reserve partnership and better integrations between Air Force Reserve Command and USAFCENT,” said Lt. Col. Jared Farr, 710th COS director of operations. “It strengthens the 710th COS alignment to USAFCENT and furthers the mutual goal to provide commanders with premier multi-domain command and control operators.

“Co-locating the detachments capitalizes on Air Reserve Component expertise and experience that complements the mission of Det. 1, 609th AOC,” Farr continued.

According to the director of operations, the 710th COS trains and deploys Airmen for the air operations center, and the detachment cadre will “support training, exercises, gap fill, reach-back and distributed operations.”

Fifteen reserve positions were allocated to move from the 710th COS at JBLE to the detachment at Shaw to fulfill mission requirements, according to Senior Master Sgt. John Gallant, 710th COS communications flight superintendent.

The integration of the two detachments will support the more than 16,000 Airmen in the Central Command area of responsibility, as well as over 7,000 strikes annually at the operational level of war.

“We are very excited about this opportunity and this total force effort.” said Col. Laurie Dickson, 710th COS commander.

Members of the Guard and Reserve are the experts in the AOC weapons system, and are integral to completing the mission, said Lt. Col. Marlon Strickland, Det. 1, 609th AOC commander.

“Det. 1, 710th COS brings a wealth of operational command and control experience to the 609th AOC,” said Strickland. “This is a huge benefit to have that expertise at Shaw and vital with our continued increase in readiness for reach-back operations.”
