The hug seen 'round the world

A heartwarming moment depicting the profession of Air Force pararescue which had a prominent role in rescuing victims from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago. The little girl in a pink shirt and pigtails flung her arms around the neck of Master Sgt. Mike Maroney, pararescueman, who hoisted her from the flooded ruins of her family's New Orleans home. The photo was a positive iconic memento during a dark time, for not only the hurricane victims, but for Maroney who had just returned from an overseas deployment to Afghanistan, before being sent to respond to hurricane victims.
